The Computer Information Systems program is designed to prepare microcomputer support specialists and computer programmers.Students pursuing the Microcomputer Support Specialist Concentration will receive hands-on experience with microcomputer applications, systems operations, microcomputer hardware and software, data communications and networking in a computer laboratory setting.

Students pursuing the Programming Concentration will focus on computer languages (VISUAL BASIC, C++, COBOL, HTML, JAVA, ORACLE, SQL, SML, XBASE and other 4th and 5th generation languages) in business organizations. This program prepares graduates to transfer to bachelor's degree programs in computer information systems or information technology.

Computer Information Systems is a growing professional field with expanding opportunities for employment. Graduates of the Computer Information Systems - Programming sequence will be able to provide the technical expertise required for the programming and operation of computers and peripheral equipment. They will also be prepared to advance into positions in the areas of systems analysis and data processing management. Graduates of the Computer Information Systems - Microcomputer Support Specialist sequence will be able to provide the technical expertise required for supporting microcomputer hardware and software and microcomputer networks. They will also be prepared to advance into positions of microcomputer support center management and end user support analyst. In New York State and the surrounding Northeastern states, ample placement opportunities exist in business, industry, government and education.

SUNY Cobleskill is certified as a Cisco Systems Local Networking Academy. Students having successfully completed Cisco training in their local high schools are eligible to receive advanced standing and up to six credit hours of college credit. From basic to advanced networking skills, the Networking Academy curriculum prepares student for lifelong opportunities in information technologies.
