Grouse Banding

Each fall FWLD 220 Wildlife Management students set up cloverleaf traps to capture ruffed grouse for banding. This cooperative study with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation was designed to identify the impacts of hunting on grouse populations. It also gives SUNY students an opportunity to learn techniques for handling, banding, and sex and age identification of grouse. To date it is quite clear that hunting has minimal impacts on the populations of grouse in our area.
