Summer Intensive English as a Second Language Program

SUNY Cobleskill offers an intensive summer English as a second language program that combines four weeks of classroom instruction with on- campus activities and some off-campus excursions.

While living and studying on the college campus, students enroll in ESOL 120, Intermediate ESL, for 3 credits. This course includes instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing to prepare for college level work. ESOL 120 is highly interactive; video and computer activities are provided in the classroom. Students may also have assigned tasks in a computer laboratory.

The Summer Intensive ESL program is available to incoming SUNY Cobleskill students and non-native English speakers who are permanent residents or U.S. citizens. In 2010, the program dates are:

Monday, July 26 through Friday, August 20, 2010.

Classes run from 9 am to 12 pm, and then again from 1 pm to 3 pm (Monday - Friday).

The cost of the program is $3000.

Academic Year

ESOL 130, Advanced ESL, is available in the fall and spring semesters. This 3-credit course is recommended for non-native speakers of English who are not quite ready for college composition. In ESOL 130, students are introduced to college-level reading and writing assignments and research techniques while attending classes with American students. Sharing classes with Americans helps students improve their English language skills.

Outside of class, writing tutors in the Center for Academic Support and Excellence offer assistance in planning and revising assignments. For more information on English as s Second Language, please e-mail Dr. Susan Jagendorf.
