Taking an online or hybrid course is a great way to achieve your educational goals.
Online learning offers students flexibility, but there are several considerations for
them regarding the completion of their educational goals. Research into online
learning has shown that there are characteristics that lend themselves to successful
online education, which include:
• Goal-setting ability
• Basic computer skills and access to computers/internet
• Good study/work habits
• Compatible life circumstances
• Prior educational experiences
• Organizational skills
No instrument can truly predict success in online or hybrid courses. However, having
a clear understanding of your circumstances and how they influence your behavior
can be the difference between completing or not completing the class. Once you are
aware of your strengths and weaknesses, you can take steps to cultivate behaviors
that will contribute with your educational success.
In addition to these challenges, students will have to consider their individual
circumstances. These circumstances include but are not limited to, whether they will
be on campus during the term? Will they have sufficient access to a computer and
the internet if needed? If they are working full-time, will their duties allow for
sufficient time to work on college classes?
The following self-assessment is designed to give you the opportunity to assess your
skills and identify possible weaknesses that may affect your success when taking
online learning classes. This instrument is not meant to substitute for educational
counseling or to deny you the opportunity to pursue a online learning class. Your
honest assessment of your skills and behaviors is in your best interest. We hope
this assessment will help you to have a successful educational experience, whether
you choose online learning or face-to-face classes.
