Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 21, 2019, is a legal holiday for members of the classified (CSEA) staff and members of the unclassified (UUP Professional and MC) staff serving on a calendar year or college year basis. Classes are not in session on MLK Day but all faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate in the variety of educational and service opportunities that will be offered.
In order to maintain essential campus operations, a small number of staff will be required to work at their normal duties on MLK Day (e.g. Heating Plant, University Police, Farm staff, etc.). Supervisors should notify staff who will be required to work at least seven (7) days prior to the holiday. These staff will be compensated in the manner they are normally compensated for working on a holiday. Our sincere thanks go to these staff members, who keep our campus running during nights, weekends and holidays all year round.
We hope that faculty and staff who are not required to work will participate in the day's activities. Several of the activities are open to the community, so you are welcome to bring family members to those events. Parents are asked to judge the appropriateness of the program for their children. Anyone bringing children should be aware that the SUNY Child Protection Policy requires that anyone under 17 years of age be in the care, custody and control of a parent or guardian throughout the time they are on campus.
Classified, Professional, and MC staff not scheduled to work on MLK day may choose to come to work and participate in the events and select an alternate day off. Please discuss this option with your supervisor. Please be advised that CSEA-represented staff not scheduled to work on 1/21 will receive compensatory time off only, even for individuals who normally receive money for working on holidays. We are grateful to CSEA Local 616 and the Cobleskill UUP Chapter for allowing these flexible arrangements.
We look forward to hosting a fun, educational and meaningful day of volunteerism and service on January 21, and hope you will participate.
