Technology Requirements


Brightspace is a learning management system designed to provide educators, administrators, and learners with a single robust, secure, and integrated system to create personalized learning environments. The use of Brightspace was a SUNY-wide implementation mandate.

Below are the requirements for Brightspace:

Operating System


  • Windows 10 or higher


  • Mac OS X 10.9 or later


Minimum Computer Specifications:

Processor: 2GHZ or Higher

RAM: Minimum of 4GB of RAM

Video Processor: Any external or internal GPU that is required by the operating system

Hard Drive: Any hard drive space that is required by the operating system


Brightspace is supported on the following desktop platforms, with the lastest broswer version:

  • Mozilla FireFox
  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Apple Safari (Mac OS only)

Brightspace is supported on the following tables and mobile devices with the latest browser version:

  • Google Chrome (Android OS only)
  • Apple Safari (Apple iOS only)


Web Conferencing Software

At SUNY Cobleskill we have two web conferencing software systems that allow instructors to interact with their students. These available systems are Microsoft Teams, and Zoom. Each software has their own special capabilities, so it is up to you to determine which one is best for your class.


Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a unified communication and collaboration platform. It combines workplace chat, video meetings, phone calls and file uploads.

Below are the requirements for Microsoft Teams:

Zoom is a video conferencing software that allows instructors to video chat with their students. Zoom allows you to share content, share your screen, and more. It can also be incorporated in your Brightspace course.

Below are the requirements for Zoom:

Speakers and Microphone:

  • Built-in, USB plug-in, or wireless Bluetooth

Internet Connection:

  • Broadband wired or wireless (3G or 4G/LTE)
Bandwidth Requirements

For 1:1 video calling:

  • 600 kbps for high-quality video
  • 1.2 Mbps for 720 HD video
  • 1080p HD video requires 3.8Mbps/3.0Mbps (up/down)

For group video calling:

  • For high-quality video: 1.0 Mbps/600kbps (up/down)
  • For 720p HD video: 2.6Mbps/1.8Mbps (up/down)
  • For 1080p HD video: 3.8Mbps/3.0Mbps (up/down)
  • For gallery view receiving: 2.0Mbps (25 views), 4.0Mbps (49 views)

For screen sharing only:

  • 50-75 kbps

For audio VoIP:

  • 60-80 kbps

At SUNY Cobleskill we use Microsoft Office as our file management system. Microsoft 365 is the productivity cloud that brings together best-in-class Office apps with powerful cloud services, device management, and advanced security. When submitting documents to your instructors it is highly recommended that you use Microsoft Office products, which you get for free with your SUNY Cobleskill account.
