So you've decided to move off campus...

Living off campus is possible for any student who submits a formal request via application and meets all of our requirements for moving off. Before leaving us, make sure to check out the links below to confirm the requirements needed to move off campus and how to stay connected to campus life after leaving the Residence Halls.

At SUNY Cobleskill, students are required to live on campus for the first and second year of their academic experience. Unless you meet specific criteria, you will be required to live on campus.

The following are exemptions from the mandatory housing policy:

  1. Moving home to the permanent home address
  2. Withdrawing from the College
  3. Taking a leave from the College
  4. Being in an officially recognized off-campus academic program for the specific semester
  5. December graduates who are not continuing to be enrolled
  6. Students that are academically ineligible to continue
  7. Documented medical reasons
  8. Documented financial hardship due to change in financial status occurring since agreeing to live on campus

Even if you meet one of these exemptions, you still must submit in writing your request to be released from housing to the Residential Life Office. For more details please contact the Residential Life Office.

Deadline for requests is December 1st for the spring semester and April 1st for fall semester. Requests are reviewed and you will be notified by email whether or not you are released.

*Please note that if you sign a Housing Agreement (which every student signs when they sign up for housing), you are bound by it for an academic year. This means that if you want to move off campus after you sign a Housing Agreement, you must request a release from housing. 

This means that you will not be automatically released for the above reasons once you sign a housing license, as it is a binding agreement. Your release will be considered by the Director of Residence Life, and you will be notified as to the decision. Submit Your Release Request >>
